Polish knights
The battle of Grunwald was preceded by decades of Polish, Lithuanian and Teutonic disputes and wars. In 1386 the Lithuanian prince, Jogaila, married Polish princess, the granddaugther of the last king of first Polish dynasty and was crowned as Polish king. It is how Polish-Lithuanian aliance started.

Ulrich von Jungingen
was the Great Master of Teutonic Order. The Order was given a land at the north of Polish territory in 1226. In exchange the knights promised to fight against pagan Prussian tribe. They extinguished them, have taken Gdansk in 1308 and sistematically grew their state which agressed Poland and Lithuania.

The avantgarde of Teutonic army
The 15th of July 1410 two armies - Teutonic at one side and joined Polish-Lithuanian forces at the other side - faced each other near the village of Grunwald

It was a very hot day
Jogaila ordered a mass service in a forest shade. Teutonic army was waiting ready to the battle for several hours in the sunshine. The Great Master has sent two swords as a gift for Polish king to urge him to the battle.
